In a year marked by volatility and shifting investor sentiment, eight memecoins emerged as outperformers against Bitcoin (BTC) despite its 130% surge. These tokens include Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Pepe Coin (PEPE), Pudgy Penguin (PENGU), Floki (FLOKI), Bonk (BONK), Brett (BRETT), and Dogwifhat (WIF), all of which have outpaced BTC’s performance in 2024.
8 Memecoins That Outperformed Bitcoin in 2024
Bitcoin, the leading crypto by market capitalization, has seen a steady yet modest increase this year, with gains exceeding 130%. In contrast, memecoins like PEPE and FLOKI have leveraged strong community support, viral marketing, and speculative trading to deliver significantly higher returns.
For instance, Pepe Coin surged after a wave of high-profile social media mentions with a whopping 1251.36% rally this year. Meanwhile, FLOKI capitalized on strategic partnerships and branding efforts, recording a surge of nearly 400%.
Dogecoin, often regarded as the original memecoin, maintained its dominance with consistent adoption and integration into mainstream platforms. DOGE price gained 261% year-to-date, outperforming BTC significantly. Moreover, Shiba Inu, another community-driven token, saw a rally tied to ecosystem expansions, including its Layer-2 scaling solution, Shibarium.

Though the SHIB price’s year-to-date gains stand at around 114% currently, the memecoin had outpaced Bitcoin significantly before being hit with a downtrend today. Whilst, emerging players like Pudgy Penguin and Bonk have also made waves, gaining traction through innovative use cases and collaborations. PENGU, which launched this month, has already surged 476%, securing a spot in the top 100 cryptocurrencies.
Furthermore, Brett and Dogwifhat have captured attention through niche campaigns and targeted engagement. WIF price has surged by a staggering 1,295% this year, outperforming Bitcoin by 10x. Whilst, Brett gained 244% in 2024.
However, the broader crypto market tells a different story. While these eight tokens have outperformed, 69% of the top 100 cryptocurrencies underperformed Bitcoin. This reflects challenges faced by altcoins amid tightening macroeconomic conditions and regulatory scrutiny.
