Chinese Artificial Intelligence (AI) DeepSeek App continues to be the talk of the tech town and it has now surpassed over 100 million downloads within just a month of its official launch.
DeepSeek: More than 100 Million Downloads in A Month
Launched on January 11, 2025, DeepSeek quickly caught the attention of users worldwide, with total downloads exceeding 110 million by February 9, as reported by QuestMobile. Weekly active users surged to nearly 97 million, signaling a rapid adoption rate for the new AI platform.
Incredible growth was also seen in the app’s weekly downloads. From January 20 to 26, the app received 285,000 downloads. But by the next week, this number skyrocketed to 63 million, marking an incredible 2700% increase in downloads.
The surge in popularity can largely be attributed to DeepSeek’s cost-effective and advanced tech features. On January 20, the app released its DeepSeek-R1 inference model to the public, which rivals the performance of top AI models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4. This move significantly boosted its visibility and downloads, reaching nearly 64 million in the week between January 27 and February 2, making it the most downloaded AI app in the country.
On Jan 26, DeepSeek also topped the Apple App Store’s free app download rankings in both the U.S. and China, surpassing ChatGPT in the U.S.
However, DeepSeek’s dominance in the AI space hasn’t gone unchallenged. In response, Elon Musk recently unveiled Grok 3, an upgraded version of his AI platform, claiming it is “the smartest AI on Earth.” During its press conference, Musk’s team presented data showing that Grok 3 outperformed leading AI models, including DeepSeek’s V3, OpenAI’s GPT-4, Claude 3.5, and Gemini 2 Pro, especially in critical areas like math, science, and programming.
