Australian computer scientist Craig Wright, infamous for his controversial claim of being Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, has received a one-year suspended prison sentence. The High Court in London found Wright in contempt for defying court orders to halt his relentless legal crusade against cryptocurrency developers.
Craig Wright: Fraudulent Claims of Bitcoin Creators
Justice Mellor, in a scathing assessment, accused Wright of fabricating evidence and lying on a grand scale to bolster his claim of being Nakamoto, the pseudonym creator of Bitcoin. The court emphasized that Wright’s forgeries and “technobabble” had long been debunked.

Despite prior rulings, Wright continued legal proceedings, seeking £900 billion in intellectual property claims tied to Bitcoin. Jonathan Hough KC, representing the Crypto Patent Alliance (COPA), described Wright’s lawsuits as malicious.
Wright’s repeated legal actions were characterized as a “desperate publicity stunt” to maintain support from his followers.
On Thursday, the court sentenced Wright for five counts of contempt, suspending his sentence for two years and ordering him to pay £145,000 in legal costs. Wright, appearing via video link from an undisclosed location in Asia, vowed to appeal, accusing the court of bias and alleging persecution by the British aristocracy.
Justice Mellor dismissed Wright’s claims, “Dr. Wright lied to the court extensively and repeatedly, using forged documents to support his biggest lis: that he is Satoshi Nakamoto”.
