OpenAI has announced huge changes to its artificial intelligence (AI) models, signaling a shift toward greater intellectual freedom and more open conversations. In a newly released policy, OpenAI stated that it intends to reduce the censorship around ChatGPT, allowing it to provide more diverse perspectives and tackle a wider range of topics.
OpenAI and Censorship
The updates are a part of ChatGPT’s plans to be neutral, particularly on controversial issues, offering multiple viewpoints without taking a subjective stance.
This ‘lifting of censorship’ update follows the company’s recent revisions to its ‘Model Specifications,’ where OpenAI introduced a new chapter titled “Seeking the Truth Together.” The chapter aims to encourage the AI to present facts and differing opinions, fostering more balanced and open discussions with users.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, also shared an update on the company’s roadmap for its upcoming AI models, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, through a post on X. Altman outlined the company’s desire to simplify its product offerings and make AI more accessible for everyday users, acknowledging that the current model and product lineup had become increasingly complex. “We want AI to just work for you,” Altman wrote. “We realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.”

Altman highlighted the upcoming release of GPT-4.5, internally dubbed “Orion,” which will be the last of its non-chain-of-thought models. Looking ahead, the company aims to unify its various AI models, including the GPT series and O-series, into a more cohesive system. This unified approach will allow users to access a broader range of tools and features, making AI more versatile and intuitive.
GPT-5 will integrate many of OpenAI’s latest technologies, including O3. GPT-5 will be available to free-tier ChatGPT users with a standard intelligence setting, while Plus and Pro subscribers will enjoy access to more advanced versions of the model, offering higher levels of intelligence and additional capabilities such as voice, canvas, search, and deep research.
