Energy Web and Volkswagen have delivered a charging solution to electric vehicle owners based on 24/7 renewable energy sources. The chagrin solution enables electric vehicle owners to match the real-time production from renewables.
The solution relies on a 24/7 matching algorithm that absorbs the locally sourced energy to maximize the use of renewable charging facilities.
Volkswagen has tested the charging solution on several of its VW ID4s. The testing phase went on for three months, majorly in Wolfsburg, Germany, where it got access to clean energy in abundance through wind and solar farms in the surrounding area.
The charging sessions lasted many days. The platform was discovered to optimize the charging of the electric vehicle for optimum clean power. All this while ensuring that the target was met at the end of each session. Jesse Morris, the Chief Executive Officer of Energy Web, said it was the first time an electric vehicle was fully charged by a verified 24/7 matched clean energy strategy.
The innovation is something to look forward to, especially at a time when the adoption of electric vehicles is gaining traction all over the globe. As the number of electric vehicle owners increases, the demand for charging solutions will also increase, and a sustainable solution will be much better for the environment then.
Compared to what the situation was, the demand for the electricity grid would be higher than before. Jesse Morris added that the project’s purpose was to show that advanced charging solutions can empower the owners of electric vehicles in terms of when and from where they wish to get their energy.
A user-friendly application enables the users to tune in how much of the energy they want from wind and how much of it they want from solar. Users can set a target of, say, 85%, along with the time for a better result. At the end of the charging session, they would be given an accurate breakdown of their session’s carbon footprint.
Smart Charging Application has been developed by integrating the open-source 24/7 toolkit by Energy Web into Elli’s green charging app. The open source was first released earlier this year. Volkswagen Group has started working on the future rollouts of the charging solution in terms of its production to ensure that a larger number of EV owners can avail of the benefit.
Users may offer confirmation of their renewable energy purchases using the safe and traceable audit trail for transactions, making it easier for organizations to manage granular energy consumption for carbon accounting. Energy Web is a non-profit with a presence all over the globe. It is a member-driven organization focused on accelerating low-carbon customer-centric energy transition.
